Safe & distributed

Your data belongs to you.

Messages, storage and passwords are encrypted. The keys are on your phone, not with us. And everything is encrypted and spread across many locations in Europe that stand in for each other.

What is stored where?

Your keys stay with you.

Only on your phone

  • The keys to your circles and contacts
  • Your message history, stored encrypted
  • No account and no sign-up with us

Spread across many locations

  • Messages, photos and files – encrypted only
  • No names, no phone numbers, no accounts
  • Deleted after 30 days at the latest

With you, as a backup

  • A file you create and keep yourself
  • Protected by a password only you know
  • Use it to move to a new phone

Storage

Important documents at hand when it matters.

  • Emergency plan, phone list or authorisations shared in your circle – or just for you
  • Stored encrypted on your phones, readable without internet
  • Encrypted and spread across many locations, so nothing depends on one phonees, so nothing depends on one phone

Passwords

Your logins, safe on your phone.

  • Save website, name and password and have them filled in when you sign in
  • Unlock with fingerprint, face or your phone’s PIN – no extra password
  • Encrypted and spread across many locations that stand in for each other

Only you hold the keys. Without them, nobody can read the messages in those locations – not even us. If you forget your backup password, the backup cannot be opened.

Where the locations are

4 countries. Separate data centres.

Everything is encrypted and spread across many locations in Europe that stand in for each other. The locations check on each other every minute: if one fails, another steps in and receives the missing copies by itself. The network heals itself.

Decentralised by design

More ways to connect. Less dependence on one place.

Your messages are not on one single server but encrypted and spread across many locations in Europe that stand in for each other. If one is unavailable, the others take over, and as soon as it is back they catch up with each other by themselves.

Distributed, not all in one place

Several delivery points carry messages. One server going down does not have to stop everything.

Content stays protected

Delivery points carry encrypted messages. They do not need to know what your messages say.

Radio as another way

Compatible radios can carry short texts without internet access, provided a radio path is available.

A closer look: what does decentralised mean in anynear?

anynear uses multiple independent message stores for internet delivery. Messages are encrypted on the device before they are sent. Delivery points store and forward encrypted content; authorised recipients decrypt it on their devices.

  • Delivery does not depend exclusively on one server.
  • The internet and optional radio connection are different transport paths. The app merges duplicate messages received through different paths.
  • The locations know no accounts and no names. They only check whether a message is signed with the right key.
  • Decentralised does not mean infrastructure is unnecessary: internet access, reachable delivery points or radios, and power are still needed.

Reliability depends on the available network and development status. Decentralisation does not guarantee delivery of every message.
